Jess speaking:
Something I get asked a lot:
Does punishment help with ADHD?
ADHD used to be considered a behavioural issue. And people thought these kids running around, misbehaving, not sitting still, getting distracted…needed more discipline, or that they didn’t care.
Now, we know that’s not true. It’s not actually a behavioural issue, it’s neurological. And the differences in behaviour are due to differences in the brain.
And, no, punishment will not get rid of our ADHD. In fact, ADHD brains don’t actually respond as well to punishment as neurotypical brains do.
It’s not that we’re misbehaving. We’re struggling.
But, immediate positive feedback and salient rewards are actually more effective for ADHD brains than they are for neurotypical brains.
ADHD isn’t a behavioural issue. It’s a neuro developmental disorder.
