Adderall and Ritalin – Which ADHD medication should you choose?

L-Theanine Gummies

Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Fruitman, M.D., Medical Director of Trifecta Health, explains the differences between ADD/ ADHD Medications: Adderall and Ritalin.

Dr. Fruitman is often asked, “How do you choose the right medication?” This is a look at the thought process behind selecting the right medication.

Adderall and Ritalin are both in the same stimulant group. The patient’s attitude and preference towards each drug is a key component in selecting the right drug. It won’t work if a patient doesn’t take their medication.

It is important to find out the patient’s past experience with each drug. Dr. Fruitman suggests that patients should start with a low dose and an extended release form. Adderall is better for motivation, Ritalin for over-stimulation.

Both these drugs have been proven to be effective in treating ADD/ADHD. When deciding on a treatment plan, the most important thing is to choose the right dosage.
